From international athlete to overweight groom

I was surprised when I saw myself in the photos, and I knew I had to make the change.

Body image is a highly personal subject, and I was uncomfortable with how I looked, how I felt and how I was perceived. In my mind, I was still the international athlete representing my country, but overindulgence living in London had taken its toll.

I had met my soul mate and as we looked at our wedding photos and talked about our plans for the future, plans to raise a family, I was determined to change. I wanted my confidence back; I tried to reconnect with my former self and get better every day, not older. I wanted my children to believe me when I said I’d won international athletics medals.

As an Exercise Physiologist on a Cardiac Rehabilitation Program, a Cardiac Physiologist in England and Australia and a personal trainer, I had the training, knowledge and skill to build my own program.

Often we have a spark that makes us change, we might see a photo of ourselves, or we might not be able to keep up with friends on a walk. When life gets ‘out of control’ and our work, business and family responsibilities understandably take over, it’s easy for our health and fitness to slide. It may be years before we realise how much we’ve let ourselves go.

For some of us, and I include myself here, there comes a time when we realise that change is necessary. A time when regaining control over our health, fitness and body is a matter of urgency.

Maybe the doctor tells you you’re at risk of heart disease or other chronic illnesses. Perhaps you have a friend or relative struggling with their health problems. For others, they’ve spent so long taking care and looking after others, that they’ve forgotten about themselves.

As an ex-sportsman, the frustrations are multiplied. We know how we used to be.

When you decide to turn things around and start the journey to regaining your health and fitness, it can be challenging to know what to do next. Maintaining motivation is hard, especially when trying to do it on your own.

That’s where I come in.
